12. Lee and his mother are talking
about modern humans.
Lee
Mom, look at this!
Mom
What?
Lee
This. Look. Itâs a knife... a stone knife. I made it myself.
Mom
Really? Let me see. M..mm.m, itâs not very good is it?
Lee
Why? Whatâs wrong with it?
Mom
Well, itâs not very sharp.
Lee
I think itâs sharp enough. I think I can use it to cut with. Anyway, this is the first one Iâve made. The next one will be better.
Mom
So why did you make it anyway? Weâve got lots of sharp knives in the kitchen. If you want to use one of those, you just have to ask me.
Lee
I wanted to see if I can make stone tools the same way early people did. Later, Iâm going to make tools out of bones of animals.
Mom
The bones of animals! Where are you going to get animal bones from?
Lee
From the kitchen. There are some bones in the kitchen. After we ate dinner today, there were some chicken bones left. Iâm going to use those chicken bones to make lots of bone tools.
Mom
Oh, are you?
Lee
Yes. Then, Iâll have lots of bone tools as well as this stone knife.
Mom
I see. And what are you going to use them for?
Lee
Iâm not really going to use them. Iâm going to exchange them with my friends at school.
Mom
Are you?
Lee
Yes. Iâm going to take them to school, spread them out on the ground and let my friends see which ones they want.
Mom
I see. And what are you going to exchange them for? What do you think your friends will give you in exchange for your stone and bone tools?
Lee
Oh, sweets, toys, books... lots of things.
Mom
Why do you think your friends would want to have tools made of bones and stone? What would they use them for?
Lee
They can use them the same way early people did. They can use them for cutting things, making clothes... they can use them for a whole lot of things.
